Bhutan - Day 5 - October 17, 2002

We started walking about 9:30 in the morning, just after visiting the school and meeting the teachers. We walked all day, over a pass at 11,400 feet, and then down into a town (100 people) who are not on any road system. Everything they have is brought on the back of a person or a horse.
On the second day of walking, we were really remote, and we were in the midst of some really big trees. Bill is here in a small crack in one of them.

LEvery once in a while, Bill got to rest. This picture was after walking 22 miles in two days..

And we came across a lumber operation where they were cutting the big trees and also weaving cloth. The people were very poor, none of the children went to school, and the lumber had to get out of the forest over a two day trek out of the forest.

We traveled another whole day through some magnificent pine forests, and saw the entire logging operation in the forest, arriving at a very small, almost deserted village a full day walk from the nearest road. The village has a brand new monestary built on a hilll above it, and is slated to be the site of the second international airport in Bhutan. The people here were very poor, and the development that will occur there over the next few years will create a large town here.
