Vietnam - Hanoi – November 21-29, 2002

The architecture changed markedly here, with these roofs from the 17th century.

And lots of French Colonial architecture around Hanoi.  The French ruled here from about 1802 to 1945.

And everpresent in Hanoi was Ho Chi Minh.  The person who was mainly responsible for kicking the French out of Vietnam, he worked as a busboy on a cruise ship and was the son of farmers, but he is revered almost as Lenin was in the Soviet Union.  His final wish was to be cremated, but the people decided they would rather have him preserved, so he is on view to the people every day, except during November and December, when he is being “maintained” by the Russian experts who did Lenin..

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum was pretty impressive.  We walked around the downtown area quite a bit and bought a couple of art prints – 1 USD each!!
