Japan – Hiroshima to Miyajima  December 14, 2002

Omanyaki – (spelling?) the place where we had lunch – a tiny place with the noodles and egg mixture cooked on a grill in front of you.  Great food .

We took the ferry out to Miyajima, an island off the coast of Hiroshima, and saw this oyster farmer.  There are floating beds of oysters all through the harbor, where they grow and mature for 3 years before they are harvested for the table..

The Itsukushima shrine is one of the most picturesque in all of Japan.  This is when the tide is out, but when the tide is in, the water is around the entire structure .

The island is sacred, and nobody is allowed to be born or to die here.  The shrine was started in 593 AD and was enlarged to its present size in 1168AD.
