Japan – Nara day trip   December 11, 2002

Another problem – vending machines.  These are on every corner, and by themselves are very helpful and contain a great array of food and drink.  But they also contain beer – and kids Bill’s age are having drinking problems because there is nothing preventing them from buying beer on the street.  Bill bought a can for us under strict supervision!!!

Bill’s haircut in Nara was not as good as the one in Bhutan, but it cost more than ten times as much!

This is the largest wooden building in the world, Todai-ji.  And it is only 2/3 the size of the original, which burned in the 18th century!!  It houses a huge Buddha

And one of the posts has a small hole in the bottom of it.  It is said that if you can crawl through it, you are without sin.  Bill made it through.  We won’t talk about the adults….

Nara – the capital of Japan in the 8th century, is a day trip from Kyoto.  We took the train, about an hour to Nara, and walked all day long.  Originally the home of the Fujiwara clan, it has the largest and oldest wooden buildings in the world.  And a hoard of hungry deer who want handouts!!
