The falls at Nikko, a small village around a mountain lake about 3 hours from Tokyo, are pretty spectacular.  .

The entrance to Tosho-gu Shrine.  This was founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was the founding member of the Tokogawa dynasty.  This was his home, and he is buried here on the hill.

Nikko is the home of the Tokogawa family, the most powerful shogunate of all time, which ruled from 1603 until 1858 when Admiral Perry rode into the harbor and demanded that Japan open its trade to the world.  This shrine is beautifully executed and wonderfully preserved. The carving of the sleeping cat is renowned all over Japan.  In the summer there are free concerts on the grounds.
