Bhutan - Day 8 - October 20, 2002

Last night we arrived in Jakar, in Bumthang province. Bill was doing his math homework here, and writing a couple of paragraphs about his books. We try to spend some time on every subject every day.

The Jakar Dzong is right above us on a hill, so we walked up to it and got a photo of Bill against the backdrop of the valley. It is too high to grow rice here, but buckwheat and other grains do quite well.

LOn the back side of Jakar Dzong, where nobody ever goes, contains these interesting structures on the side of the building. They are outhouses, and the waste falls 30 or 40 feet to the ground below. Mighty cold in winter, especially with a cold wind.

We arrived in the Bumthang Valley after the punishing 5 hour drive (almost 100 miles) and stayed in Jakar, the main town in the area.  This area is known for its religious festivals or “tshechu” s, with fantastic dances and costuming, and we were here to visit two that were starting the day after we arrived.  Alas, like much in Bhutan, not everything started at the right time, and we had to wait an extra day before the festivals began!
