Bhutan - Day 7 - October 19, 2002

Bill up on a hill above our camp. He climbed about 3000 ft up and 4000 ft down in really sloppy mud, and when he got to camp after a couple of hour drive, the first thing he did was climb another hill!!
This chorten, called the Chendebji Chorten, is a replica of a very famous one in Nepal called Bodnath. It is an impressive site, standing 40 feet high in this remote valley

LWe drove down the road to Trongsa. This is the Trongsa Dzong, one of the largest and most impressive in Bhutan. It is seen here from across the valley. We had a mission to deliver some electronics equipment to the High School in Trongsa.Bill was introduced to the entire high shool freshman class and they all wanted to get into the picture! The headmistress was very pleased, and now the photography club has a digital camera and a GPS, courtesy of Mike Hawley and the crew at friendly planet.

The High School was exceptionally well run. The headmistress is also the wife of the Governor of the area (the equivalent of the Mayor of a group of towns) and the 451 students were getting a very solid education with lots of thought put into the curriculum. Class includes Saturday mornings, when everyone is allowed to dress informally, and all the students help out with the "public service" tasks: weeding, taking out the trash, mowing, and generally making the school a great place to be!
