Thailand – Hua Hin – November 7 – 11, 2002

We headed south on the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin, the original resort location in Thailand, from the 1920’s.  Bill and Dick played golf the first afternoon.

On the course were hazards we were unfamiliar with – as our caddie yelled “monkeys” we realized that they really liked to pick up balls for themselves.  They got one of ours to add to their collection.

We had been seeing every site and historic monument within reach, so having a three days to rest and relax was a good thing..

We took the train down to Hua Hin, 2nd class – no air conditioning, but fans in the cars and windows that opened all the way.  Quite pleasant for the trip down, but it took almost 3.5 hours.  Constantly people coming through the train to sell us water, food, and everything else you could ask for.

Hua Hin was much like Florida in climate and in development.  The train line was laid in the 1920’s and the grand railroad hotel, which is now the Sofitel Hua Hin, was created.  The royal family has their summer place 2km down the beach, and the water is really perfect – except that it is still polluted – imagine swimming on Revere beach with a little more pollution and MUCH warmer water..
