Bhutan – Trek to Laya - October 23 to 31, 2002

After staying overnight in Punakha, we visited the dzong there, which has been undergoing a complete renovation for the last 5 years.  It is truly magnificent!  There is a complete lumber yard there, and several hundred people working on the project.

The inside courtyard was open for us, as was a brand new hall with a 40 foot tall Buddha figure.

This was the school at Damji, where we stayed the first night.  They were practicing songs and dances for some visiting dignitary.

Punakah to the end of the road where we started our trek was only about 20km, but it took us 1.75 hours to get there over some horrible roads. We unloaded our gear and headed up the trail, arriving about 5 hours and 15 km later in the little town of Damji, where we stayed the night.  Far down below us were rice fields, where people were harvesting their rice.  And the barking dogs were crazy – their idea of a good guard dog is one that starts barking at sundown and doesn’t stop until sunrise!
