In one of the two house-museums in the town, there was this cat house.



The interior of a sake brewery.  There are 8 high-quality brewers in Takayam due to the mountain water that runs through the town.  They are small affairs, signified by a ball of cedar leaves hung outside the front door

Takayama was a preservationists dream.  Edo period houses and shops, sake factories right in town, morning markets along the river and enough tourist yen to keep it all afloat.  We stayed in a 250 year old ryoken in the old town, and walked everywhere.  The food was absolutely superb, but we could have skipped the breakfast of raw egg and thousands of other small dishes, most of them containing raw fish or fermented soybeans or something similar.
