And yes, there are still geishas working throughout Kyoto.  This is during one of our evening walks, where we saw three of four in the space of a half hour, all of them accompanying clients to dinner or entertainment.

 

 



Incense is big in Japan, and people take it very seriously.  This is an upscale incense shop in Kyoto.

Geishas still work the social circuit in the big cities, where people will pay large sums for them to entertain, dance and just generally hob-nob with them.  It might cost 2000-3000USD per night to have a geisha entertain clients for an hour or two.  And no, there is no sex involved.
