We were really surprised that Japan celebrated Christmas.  There were decorations everywhere, all of them going up the day after Thanksgiving, even though there is no Thanksgiving day in Japan!!!!  It is a huge consumer holiday, just like the US, but it seems to have been developed by the merchants over the past 15 years.  Talking to friends who had lived there 15 years ago, there was no celebration at Christmas at all.
