Cambodia – Phnom Penh – November 17 – 20, 2002

The festival began in earnest the next morning, with boats racing on the river and crowds of spectators on both sides cheering them on.  Boats had 61, 51 40 or 27 rowers, and either standing or sitting, two distinct classes.

The hotel we stayed at, the Hotel California, had the foresight to provide shirts to one of the boats – they did a great job rowing on the first day we saw them!

The photo above was from the balcony in front of our room.  The view from here was great, and the people wonderful.  The 400 plus boats that participated in the festival races were of varying skill levels, but everyone enjoyed the time.  Temperature hovered around 90 degrees F.
